Drummond Ltd. continues to strengthen direct communication with new generations in Colombia. Drummond Ltd. continues to strengthen its direct communication with the country’s younger generation. Recently, the company received 11th grade students from the educational institution José Guillermo Castro Castro from La Jagua de Ibirico to its Pribbenow Mine; where they observed the procedures that are performed in the mining operation, which allowed them to increase their understanding of the materials learned in class.
This visit was led by Drummond Ltd.’s team of experts, which included Fray Orozco, Environmental Department Director and Luwing Otero, Long-term planning Engineer for the Engineering Department. They explained each of the areas that constitute the operation of the company, as well as how procedures related to industrial safety and environmental management are implemented.
Part of the content presented, was the management of environmental licenses, as well as the techniques used to compensate and protect the flora and fauna. Another important issue discussed was the projects that have been developed and are currently being implemented by the company to improve the living conditions of inhabitants in the company’s area of influence.
“By coming here it is easy to clarify any doubts and we can see that it is different from the general population’s point of view. Now we understand how things work”, expressed José Carlos Paternina, Technical student in Mining at the institution.
During the visit, the students were able to observe the irrigation control carried out on the roads, the distribution and utilization of Green zones that have been recovered, and the care given to the fauna that inhabits these spaces. These future professionals deepened their knowledge and resolved concerns with the help of Supervisor Fray Orozco. From the lookout point of El Paujil dam, they expressed their admiration for the environmental commitment showed by the company.
The students understood that mining can be carried out in a responsible manner, one that involves safety, by correctly using all the available resources.
“Through this experience, one receives more information; what needs to be studied, and the important thing is that it meets with environmental protection”, highlighted Mercedes Garcia Jimenez, 11th grade student.

To understand not only how to manage mining, but also how to utilize and protect the natural resources that are part of this territory, are good ways to strengthen the education and knowledge that these students acquire in their classrooms.
“This is the time for these students to think of what surrounds them, to look at the resources that we have here in our municipality, and to see themselves as good citizens who think that mining is very important for our society”, expressed Hugo Alberto Diaz, Mining Professor at this institution.
In this way, Drummond Ltd. continues to express its commitment with the education of the people in its zone of influence, and realizes that responsible mining cares for and protects the environment in which it is developed.
