Drummond Ltd. hosted officials from the Mining Safety and Rescue Group of the National Mining Agency (ANM) at its mining operation in the department of Cesar. They learned firsthand about the company’s best practices in electrical risk management and its commitment to sustainability through the use of clean energy.
During the day, visitors participated in a theoretical and practical workshop designed to demonstrate the procedures and devices Drummond uses for electrical power control. They were then given a tour of the mining operations.
“At the workshop, we shared all our experience in electrical risk control. We then gave them a tour so they could learn about the operations and main components of our electrical system. Our electricians demonstrated the application of the hazardous energy control procedure, tagging and locking,” explained Andrés Zuleta, Drummond’s electrical maintenance supervisor.
This opportunity strengthened the technical exchange between the company and the entity responsible for overseeing and promoting safe mining in the country.
“It has been a productive and educational visit for me, as an official of the National Mining Agency, to be able to replicate Drummond’s controls and risk assessments in other mines across the country,” emphasized Iovani Gómez Celis, manager of the ANM’s mining safety and rescue group.
The officials also highlighted the importance of using clean energy as part of the mining operation’s efficiency and sustainability, after learning in detail about the Cañahuate I Solar Park, located within the mining complex. It produces part of the energy that supplies Drummond’s mining operations, also contributing to reducing emissions.
“We have seen the type of energy used here; clean energy. We learned about the solar panels and their distribution to all the locations or sites where the electrical circuit is handled here. It has been very fruitful for us,” said Laura Cucaita Mendoza, T1 Grade 10 ESSM manager at the ANM.
Likewise, Drummond’s focus on comprehensive operational risk management was emphasized.
“What most impacted and caught my attention was learning about the safety protocols in place for managing the various risks associated with mining operations. I’m pleasantly surprised and happy to see Drummond’s commitment to safety,” said Manuel Mesa Torres, a Grade 10 O1 technician at the ANM.
With this visit, Drummond reaffirms its commitment to strengthening responsible mining in Colombia, promoting technical dialogue with mining authorities and sharing its best practices in safety, sustainability, and energy transition.
