Throughout the month of October, Drummond concentrated its efforts on maintaining an open and clear dialogue with local authorities in the areas of mining influence, contractors, suppliers and the various unions that make up the company. This is in addition to the company’s ongoing efforts to align its operations with high standards, including respect for human rights and human rights due diligence.

This work has allowed Drummond to strengthen its Human Rights Policy (https://drummondltd.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Politica-de-Derechos- Humanos.pdf) and to guarantee good practices that result in a safe, sustainable operation that is aware of the needs of its neighboring communities.

Drummond focuses on risk prevention and management with local authorities

Through the implementation of the ‘Safety and Human Rights Toolbox’, developed by the Mining and Energy Committee (CME Colombia) and the Regional Center for Responsible Business and Entrepreneurship (CREER), a meeting was held with Drummond and local authorities in the mining areas of influence.

The two-day event allowed the identification of risks, the characterization of the area, the territorial scope, the analysis of cases and the development of strategies to prevent specific problems in nearby municipalities and to manage them in a responsible and efficient manner.

“For us as the National Army, who are also guarantors of the law, who have principles and values, who have our national constitution as a priority, it is interesting to share these moments. A satisfactory experience that will also be given to all the subordinates,” said Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Martínez Mendoza, commander of the Energy and Road Battalion No. 2, located in La Jagua de Ibirico in the department of Cesar.

Blanca Nieves Arzuaga, Commissary of the National Police in charge of human rights for the department of Cesar, said: “We have attended a very important invitation from Drummond Ltd. where we have participated in a training aimed at the public forces, Police and Army, in order to identify the problems that the community has been suffering related to human rights issues. It is important that we all take into account the definition of these problems in order to be guarantors of the fundamental rights of the community in general”.

The experience and knowledge of the authorities present, together with the standardized methodology, was key in the conversation focused on issues such as citizen security, public safety, socioeconomic aspects, governance, among other impact situations that affect the environment, to lead to the identification of risks and, finally, to their root cause.

Thus, the updated view of the risks, both of the company and of the public forces, contributed to the understanding of these risks and allows for a clearer map to know where to direct support in the event of human rights violations.

Drummond reaches the 10th HR session with suppliers and contractors

In this tenth version, around 100 contractors from the mining and port operations participated in Drummond’s call. During the meeting, the advances that the company has been leading in human rights, safety, social responsibility and sustainability were presented.

Within the session, the ‘Café del Mundo’ methodology was developed, rotating through different topics and sectors, in which the contractors told how they adopted the model for compliance with human rights in their companies and what they identified from Drummond’s actions.

“I would like to highlight our client’s intention to bring together all the allies and contractors so that we can align our ideas and policies in favor of a stronger and more positive impact in the area of influence of the mining corridor and where Drummond carries out its activities,” said Fabio Barrera Prada, general manager of the contractor Cosecharte.

Also participating in this session were the vice presidents of sustainability, communities and governance, and public affairs and communications, as well as the leaders of the procurement and contracts areas.

“For Drummond Ltd. it is very important to share with allies and stakeholders. We share with contractor companies that are permanently linked to the mining project and it is an opportunity to endorse Drummond’s commitment to issues such as human rights and our community projects,” emphasized Jorge Cotes García, purchasing manager of Drummond Ltd.

As Pablo Urrutia, vice president of public affairs and communications, says about Drummond’s human rights management: “We met to talk about what are the challenges and what are the opportunities in the performance we have as a company in human rights and social responsibility. We are all here to improve, to hear ideas, to hear suggestions so that our Human Rights Policy, our human rights risk matrix, can be improved and ideas can be contributed so that our performance can be the best.

It is worth noting that, year after year, since 2017, Drummond has been holding different sessions with this group, motivating its allied companies to replicate the sustainability model and promote the human rights policy with their workers.

Cooperation and mutual respect, Drummond dialogues with its unions

For Drummond, building relationships based on respect and transparency is essential in the development of its operations, especially with its employees, the company has led various sessions that reinforce this theme.

On this occasion, Drummond created a new space in which leaders of the different union groups within the company participated. A beneficial scenario in which active listening and different perspectives of the participants were achieved.

During the event, ideas were exchanged, potential risks were addressed and identified, based on human rights as a guiding principle for business management, in order to prevent, mitigate and remedy any critical aspect that might arise.

From the Peace and Human Rights pillar, which is part of its sustainability strategy, Drummond will continue to strengthen its capabilities and those of its different stakeholders to contribute to the construction of a responsible and just society.
