Santa Marta, September 25, 2025

Within the framework of the 1st “Sustainability Policy Forum: Challenges and Opportunities”, organized by the Universidad del Magdalena, in the city of Santa Marta, Drummond Ltd. socialized its carbon neutrality strategy, reaffirming its commitment to knowledge transfer, energy transition and the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the Colombian Caribbean.
The presentation was given by Juan Durán Mejía, Drummond Ltd.’s environmental management supervisor, who explained the actions the company is taking to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050. These include the implementation of a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory under the ISO 14064-1 international standard, the development of proprietary software for monitoring the carbon footprint, the start-up of the Cañahuate I Solar Park, which provides 33% of the energy for its mining operation, and the connection to the National Transmission System.

During his speech, Durán highlighted the initiatives to reduce and remove greenhouse gases that the company has incorporated into its carbon neutrality strategy. These include the construction of the second phase of the Cañahuate Solar Park, the conversion of the vehicle fleet from fossil fuels to natural gas, and the conservation of areas with vegetation cover with high carbon sequestration potential on the company’s land.
“For us, talking about carbon neutrality is not just a long term goal, it is a route that we have already started to travel with concrete actions. We are committed to integrating sustainability into every process, from the rigorous measurement of our emissions to the implementation of renewable energy and conservation projects. Sharing these advances in an academic setting such as this forum allows us to inspire new generations and, at the same time, nourish ourselves with their ideas to continue strengthening our environmental strategy,” said Juan Durán Mejía, environmental management supervisor at Drummond Ltd.
The forum, held at the Madre Margot Dávila Auditorium – Claustro San Juan Nepomuceno, brought together business leaders, academics, students and sustainability experts to generate a space for dialogue on the challenges and opportunities posed by sustainability policy in the region.
“Today we had the opportunity to share an enriching space with Drummond, where we learned about the initiatives they are having in terms of sustainability issues. This, as a student, gives us the opportunity to learn how private companies are focusing on sustainability within their processes and also opens the door to work with the student associations,” said Kelly Ariza Alvernia, a student of environmental and sanitary engineering at the Universidad del Magdalena.
Lino de Jesús Torregrosa Monsalve, professor at the Universidad del Magdalena, highlighted the company’s contribution to academia: “On behalf of the Environmental Engineering Program, we are very grateful for Drummond’s participation in all the academic processes we have been carrying out for several years. We have always received their support around academics and around the project that is developed in conjunction with the alma mater. Today, precisely, this contribution is reflected in the information provided on its environmental sustainability processes”.
With its participation, Drummond Ltd. reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the construction of partnerships that promote education, carbon neutrality and the conservation of ecosystems in the Colombian Caribbean.
