*Moment when the planting of fingerlings takes place in the Mata de Palma Marsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

In support of sustainability and environmental commitment in its mining areas of influence, Drummond Ltd. carried out a new release of 400,000 fingerlings, which benefit artisanal fishermen and other inhabitants of Potrerillo and the township of La Loma in the municipality of El Paso, Cesar.<\/p>\n\n

During the activity, Drummond, with the support of the operator Fauna Caribe, the Aquaculture and Fishing Association – AUNAP, and the Asopespo Association, made up of 30 fishing families, participated to release 95% of the fingerlings in the Mata de Palma Marsh, and the remaining percentage between the Paraluz and Garrapata channels.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe are in the Mata de Palma marsh carrying out the planting of 400 thousand fingerlings, among which we have 300 thousand bocachico and 100 thousand dorada. In addition, we carried out planting in the channels that correspond to Paraluz and Garrapata, which are contributors of water flow to this Mata de Palma marsh. \u201cThese activities include not only strengthening knowledge, but also learning a little more about the requirements and needs of these communities in relation to the swamp,\u201d emphasized Juan Guillermo D\u00edaz Nieto, environmental project engineer at Drummond Ltd.<\/p>\n\n

This restocking effort is coupled with various training programs aimed at communities to ensure sustainable fishing, covering topics such as planting, fishing practices, and environmental awareness workshops<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThanks to Drummond as the project funder, and to Fundaci\u00f3n Fauna Caribe as the executor, because they are contributing their grain of sand to the natural environment. \u201cRestocking is very important for the community because we are bringing resources to the fishermen for their future livelihood,\u201d said Roimer Hern\u00e1ndez Gonz\u00e1lez, representative of the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority \u2013 AUNAP.<\/p>\n\n

It is worth noting that Drummond has been carrying out this type of action for more than 5 years, during which time it has managed to release hundreds of thousands of fingerlings, contributing to the gradual recovery of the region’s ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n

As in previous restocking efforts, the fishermen were responsible for carrying out the planting with their own hands, which facilitates the survival of the fish by introducing them into a new environment.<\/p>\n\n

As Dayeny Isabel Mej\u00eda Mu\u00f1oz, representative of the Asopespo fishermen’s association, indicated: “The fish will be a source of sustenance, although many migrate there are others that do stay, and that helps generate income for the fishermen here in Potrerillo.”<\/p>\n\n

With these actions, Drummond will continue to promote responsible environmental practices that contribute to the recovery of ecosystems and bodies of water near its operations.<\/p>\n\n
