During May and June, Drummond Ltd. received students at the Pribbenow Mine from the Mining Engineering and Geology Program at Universidad Nacional, Medellin campus, and students from Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnica Profesional (INFOTEP), Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC), and Institución Educativa Nacional Agustín Codazzi. The visits began with introductory talks given by representatives from Drummond Ltd.’s different areas, on environment, mining, and social responsibility issues both inside and outside the company.
The most frequent asked questions during the visits were related to the company’s mining projects, wastewater, industrial water treatment and use, action plans with communities in the area of influence, and occupational health issues.
After the introductory talks, the students from Universidad Nacional, Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia, and Institución Educativa Nacional Agustín Codazzi each had an opportunity to tour the El Paujil reservoir and the Lookout at Ramp 7. Each of the tour sites allowed the participants to personally experience Drummond Ltd.’s environmental projects and mining operation.
The students were interested in the details of Drummond’s mining processes and the new projects underway at the Pribbenow and El Descanso mines. They commented that the experience enriched their educational processes. “The information was very valuable because it helped us learn about new alternatives for mining and about Drummond’s social and environmental responsibility. There are few industries that are applying this in Colombia,” expressed Diana Marcela, student at Universidad Nacional.
“I really enjoyed the experience at Drummond’s Mine, because I have previously only seen the new mining in Boyacá which is small-scale and underground. This is a great experience for me because it’s large-scale mining, and it’s one of the best-known companies in the country,” expressed Cesar Rodriguez, student at UPTC.
Biology professor, Luz Ángela Martinez, from Institución Educativa Nacional Agustín Codazzi is one of the group of professors supporting the ‘Environmental Management Techniques Program.’ She stated, “It’s interesting to have the students learn about Drummond’s procedures, and understand that, despite being a company that is extracting a natural resource, it is compensating impacts on the environment. Now I can go back into the classroom and talk to them using clear examples from our field visit to Drummond’s Pribbenow Mine.”

These visits, provide Drummond Ltd. an opportunity to educate the public about its processes and operations by to clearing up any doubts. Concerns about the company are directly addressed by providing information and thus reconfirms Drummond Ltd.’s commitment to responsible mining.
