As part of its commitment to continue contributing to the social and educational development of its areas of influence, Drummond Ltd. delivered a major construction, endowment and improvement project at the Boquerón Educational Institution, municipality of La Jagua Ibirico, Cesar.
“We delivered the improvement, expansion and remodeling of the educational institution for the community of Boquerón. The work comprised building new classrooms, sanitary batteries, a library, and remodeling all facilities for the enjoyment and comfort of students. We hope that this, in addition to the resources we provide, gives all the capacities so that the children and young people of the region can study and improve their quality of life,” said Juan Pablo Arteaga, vice president of sustainability at Drummond Ltd.

The project, in compliance with sheet IS 1-1 of Boquerón’s socioeconomic management plan, included the construction of six school classrooms, a sanitary battery and a school library. In addition, general improvement of the infrastructure (sports court, administrative and preschool areas, school cafeteria, physics, chemistry and biology laboratories, as well as the auditorium). The walls were painted and repaired as well.

“We very much welcome it. It is work that will have a great impact on education, especially of that student population of our Boquerón district. Today we want to thank Drummond for taking on this role with great responsibility, within the framework of the PMS, as well as complementing the work carried out at the Life Center. We are very grateful to Drummond and I hope it retains this great sense of responsibility to mining and to the people around it,” said Bernardo Ospino, leader of the Boquerón Community Action Board.

The mining company also made delivery of general endowment: 300 chairs, 14 acrylic boards, 14 tables and chairs for teachers, full complement for laboratories, 6 air conditioners, wardrobes, lockers, desks, administrative furniture, technological equipment, sound system, ecological kit, trash cans, stretcher, medicine cabinet and sports equipment. In addition, the infrastructure was adequate to ensure inclusion of students with motor disabilities.

“We are very pleased and happy for this majestic work. What joy for the children, for this student population, for the parents, but especially for the township. A project that dignifies them, that will definitely generate a better student environment. The administration today thanks Drummond for each of its efforts,” said Leonardo Hernández, mayor of La Jagua de Ibirico.

In doing so, Drummond reaffirms its commitment to education as a fundamental pillar for social development, thus contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.
