As part of its commitment to the care and conservation of the environment, Drummond Ltd led at its mining operations a campaign to strengthen the knowledge of employees and contractors regarding the segregation, classification and final disposal of common, recyclable and hazardous waste.
Juan José Durán, Drummond’s environmental management supervisor, noted that the purpose of these activities “is to increase the waste reuse targets in the company.” At present, the mining company reuses approximately 75 % of the recyclable, common and hazardous waste.
The campaign had the participation of three contractor companies – Veolia, AEAM and Interaseo – who designed strategies to encourage and socialize the appropriate handling of waste.
“We are in charge of promoting sensitivity among workers and contractors with regard to the environment. Our objective in the waste management campaign is to strengthen the separation of waste at the source. For this, we held activities in which the workers had to associate each kind of waste with the corresponding container and color. This allowed us to check that the personnel know the color code for waste management,” said Lusena García of contractor company AEAM.
The activities were held at the various dining halls of the company’s mining operations, located in the department of Cesar.
“I thought it was an excellent activitgy because that is where we test the lessons that the company has given us. My activity was the classification of waste, and I thought it was excellent because we can contribute much with what we have learned here to know how to classify the waste that we generate,” said Drummond maintenance supervisor Orlando Barón.
Through this campaign, the company was able to reaffirm that a large proportion of its employees and contractors clearly understand the color codes defined for the disposal of waste.
With strategies like this one, Drummond will continue to create awareness and strengthen the correct separation and appropriate handling of common, recyclable and hazardous waste among employees and contractors, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.
