In its commitment to strengthen quality education and provide spaces for knowledge about mining that is well done, Drummond Ltd., in alliance with Universidad del Magdalena, began the transfer of technology for young people who are studying in the various engineering programs at this higher learning institution.
Thus, during two days, leaders and engineers of the company presented different components and their experiences on the processes, management and technical solutions that have been applied in the ‘Track Irrigation Automation’ within Drummond Ltd.’s mining operations.
“This is a space that allows us to showcase everything we do within our operation, such as how we develop a sustainable mining operation. We want all students and teachers to be able to learn first-hand about the development of large-scale mining,” said Beatriz Zapata Pérez, government affairs manager for Drummond Ltd.
As part of the technology transfer, Production Engineer II, Frank Diaz Armenta, explained in general terms the company’s operating structure and the mining processes where engineering has been essential. Ricardo Quiroz Palomino, electrical maintenance supervisor, emphasized the new technology that has been developed and created for the irrigation system, projecting a real model with which he explained its operation to the students.
On the other hand, Daniel Ordóñez Ramírez, assistant supervisor of electrical maintenance, in addition to expanding the information on automation processes, also motivated the students, as a graduate from Universidad del Magdalena, to continue preparing to contribute to engineering solutions that in the future may allow greater advances in areas such as mining.

On this occasion, Ronald Martínez Abuabara, director of the Electronic Engineering Program of the Universidad del Magdalena, highlighted the new agreement for the professional development of the students: “It has been a very enriching day where we have had industrial engineers, electronic engineers and, in particular, our students have been able to learn firsthand from these professionals how the mining operation works and what is the relevance of our work as engineers in this training process.
With these actions, Drummond is once again committed to the country’s education through partnerships that strengthen the development of joint projects between the company and academia, and facilitate the training of the country’s future engineers.
